Appalachian Desserts


1. Apple Stack Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups spiced apple butter

Instructions

  1. Mix dough ingredients.
  2. Divide into thin layers.
  3. Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes per layer.
  4. Stack with apple butter between layers.
  5. Wrap and rest overnight before slicing.

2. Blackberry Cobbler

Ingredients

  • 4 cups blackberries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup butter

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in baking dish (350°F).
  2. Mix flour, sugar, milk.
  3. Pour batter over butter.
  4. Spoon berries on top.
  5. Bake 40–45 minutes.

3. Molasses Cookies

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar.
  2. Add egg and molasses.
  3. Mix in dry ingredients.
  4. Bake 10–12 minutes at 350°F.

4. Banana Pudding (Church Supper Style)

Ingredients

  • 1 box vanilla pudding (prepared)
  • 3 bananas, sliced
  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • 1 cup whipped topping

Instructions

  1. Layer wafers, bananas, pudding.
  2. Repeat layers.
  3. Top with whipped topping.
  4. Chill 2 hours.
